Frequently Asked Questions
What are American bulldogs like with children ?
Dogs adapt and react to their environment.
If your American bulldog is raised with lots of love and properly socialised from a young age you shouldn't have any problems.
Our 3 kids (all under 8) ride them around the yard, yank their tails, tip sand on their heads among other things that any typical child would do to a dog and i have never seen any
type of undesired behaviour.
As with any large breed of dog or other animal... It is common sense to never leave children unsupervised while interacting with any dogs.
Aren't American bulldogs pig dogs... mindless killing machines ?
I laugh when i hear that one. Anyone who thinks pig dogs are mindless killing machines have been sadly misinformed.
Anyone else who has hunted pigs for a living with any breed of dog will tell you the same thing. It takes an enormous amount of time to teach a dog to become a successful hunting dog. During the hundreds of hours of training in the field very strong bonds are made between the hunter and the dogs.
Pig dogs are highly trained and need to be very intelligent. dumb dogs are found sleeping on lounges... not on the back of a pig chasers ute.
Both the dogs and the pig hunter must have 100% trust in one another. Your lives depend on it. There is no place for a mindless killing machine while your out there... up to your armpits in sorghum with 100 kg boars running around you who would love nothing more than to get you on the ground and start eating.
Pig dogs and man both rely heavily on one another while hunting, You need to know with absolute certainty that if shit hits the fan the dog is smart enough to foresee hidden dangers and act accordingly The dog also relies on you with his life. The dog needs to know with certainty that if he gets into trouble and is swinging on that boars ear... you will jump in there and do your part with out letting him down.
I have hunted with many different breeds of dogs over the years and i will say this: The American bulldog is certainly not the fastest running dog I've owned but he is the one that i would rather have by my side when things get ugly out in the paddock. These dogs have brains. they know 'what's going on' and are definitely not mindless killing
machines.
